Welcome to Cantonese Opera Silicon Valley COASV

The Cantonese Opera Association-Silicon Valley (est. 2001) is a non-profit organization based in Santa Clara County, California. COASV’s mission is to preserve and promote the fine art of Chinese Opera-Theatre. Using the language, drama, history, music and dance, traditions and symbolism of the traditional performing art of ancient China, the vision is to inspire the diverse ethnic communities of the United States to foster an appreciation of Chinese Opera-Theatre.

The multi-ethnic communities of Santa Clara County have brought many interesting cultural art forms to the area. COA aspires to promote and present the unique, multi-disciplined art of the wondrous world of Chinese Theatre to cultivate cross-cultural art appreciation in the community.

The Chinese society in California began in 1851 with the immigrant Cantonese laborers of Guangdong province. The Cantonese dialect society is a significant part of the 150-year history and growth of California. COA was founded to basically serve this particular community. Today, the multi-lingual Chinese represent approximately 28 percent of the total population in Santa Clara County.

Changing Landscapes
Contemporary Chinese Fiber Art opens February 3, 2009

We are thrilled to announce that the first exhibition of contemporary Chinese fiber art ever to travel to the United States is opening at the San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles on February 3, 2009.

This exhibition, which includes 45 works of tapestry, sculpture and mixed media by 48 artists, was created in partnership with Beijing's Tsinghua University's Fiber Arts Institute.

We are delighted to be hosting a delegation of 25 of the exhibiting artists who will be visiting from across China. Please come out for the events on February 6 and 8 and help us welcome these very special guests.

February 6, South First Friday, open 10am-5pm and again 8-11pm
Museum admission is free all day.  Join us in the evening 8-11pm for an informal opportunity to meet the artists visiting from China.

February 8, Sunday, 2-4pm
Opening reception, free with Museum admission and have the opportunity to mingle with the artists visiting from China.

February 22, Sunday, 2-3pm
Chinese Folk Art Tradition, Transition and Influence
